Provence
Explore the Natural BeautyBike trip
The Alpilles are an ideal terrain for practicing bicycle rides. There are many possibilities for itineraries. One of the most traveled is the ascent of Les Baux de Provence by the road from the north (D27). Although quite steep, this route is magnificent with many laces just before the pass. The descent to Les Baux among the ruiniform rocks is simply magical… There are many other routes, let us quote at random:
Maussane – Le Destet – Mouriès
Eygalières – Aureille – Eyguières
St-Rémy – St-Etienne du Grès
There are also many mountain bike rides.
The great classic of the massif is the ride on the ridges between Les Baux and St-Rémy.
Golf at les Baux de Provence
More than a round of golf, we invite you to a real stroll, where the paths can be taken by cart and cart. And where the views of the Alpilles will brighten up your day.
Culture
Provençal culture, in addition to its traditional part linked to its language (Provencal pastoral) and its traditions (Christmas crib, santons, pétanque) covers all artistic fields. Literature is illustrated there with authors like Frédéric Mistral, Jean Giono, René Char or Francis Gag. The light of the Provencal sky has inspired the greatest painters from Paul Cézanne to Auguste Renoir, from Vincent van Gogh to Pablo Picasso, photographers like Lucien Clergue, Bernard Faucon, Willy Ronis, Bernard Plossu or Hans Silvester. The first cinema was opened there, and it became famous with directors like the Lumière brothers or Marcel Pagnol, actors like Raimu or Fernandel and finds its peak each year during the Cannes Film Festival. In addition, the region has become the land of festivals, with the Festival d’Avignon; the International Festival of Lyric Art of Aix-en-Provence, the Chorégies of Orange and the Choralies of Vaison-la-Romaine, etc. The Carnival of Nice is internationally renowned and constitutes one of the major events of the winter season.
Les rencontres de la photographie – Arles
Les Rencontres d’Arles (formerly called Rencontres internationales de la photographie d´Arles) is an annual summer photography festival founded in 1970 by Arles photographer Lucien Clergue, writer Michel Tournier and historian Jean-Maurice Rouquette.
With a program consisting mainly of original productions, the Rencontres d´Arles have acquired an international stature. In the 2019 edition, the festival welcomed 145,000 spectators.
Often produced in collaboration with museums and French and foreign institutions, the exhibitions presented in various heritage places in the city are the subject of a scenography and certain historical sites – such as chapels from the 12th century or industrial buildings from the 19th century – are only open to the public for the duration of the festival.
Avignon Theater Festival
The Avignon Festival is the most important theater and live performance event in the world, in terms of the number of creations and spectators gathered. Founded in September 1947 by Jean Vilar with the invaluable help of Jean Rouvet, at the suggestion of the art dealer Christian Zervos, this performing arts festival is considered the oldest and most famous in France.
Originally a simple Dramatic Art Week offering three creations in three different scenic locations, in July 1948 this event became the Avignon Festival. The Cour d’honneur of the Palais des Papes is the cradle of the Festival which invests more than 30 places in the city, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its region, in works of art but also gymnasiums, cloisters, chapels. , gardens, quarries, churches.
Colorado Provençal
Colorado Provençal is an old ocher quarry. The important Rustrel deposit has given its quarries the evocative name of Colorado. This exceptional site, so named for the variety of its shapes and colors, allows the pleasure of hiking to be combined with the discovery of an industrial heritage.
The beauty of the site is the result of the work carried out by four generations of ocher trees and peasants. The old ocher hill sites stretched for about 4 km. The current site covers more than 100 hectares. The inhabitants of Rustrel called the site “the Ubacs of Rustrel”.
It is Father Martel, president of Alpes de Lumière who, by surveying the paths of the town with the aim of creating the GR 6, baptizes the site “Colorado Provencal”, for the incredible colors that recall those of the American canyon and especially because Colorado in Provençal means “red”.
Safari into the wild Camargue
Magic word, the Camargue is the territory where people live with horses, bulls, birds, the sky and the water.
The magic of a country with unspoiled natural spaces, a fragile sanctuary of exceptional flora and fauna in Europe, protected by the Camargue Regional Natural Park, it is a unique landscape. Located between the two arms of the Rhône (it is a delta: the Grand Rhône to the south-east, the Petit Rhône to the southwest) the Camargue is a vast wetland of approximately 100,000 hectares, the largest of France and also one of the most secret. It is divided into three very distinct zones: the crops in the north of the delta, the salt marshes in the west and east and the lagoons in the south.
The Camargue is also a territory made by man, which has shaped the space with in particular the containment of the two arms of the Rhône and the sea, and the development of an adapted agriculture such as the cultivation of rice and harvesting salt. It has achieved this by mastering the exchanges between the fresh waters of the Rhône, the saline waters of the Mediterranean and the lands of the delta. About a hundred herds are dedicated to breeding Camargue horses and bulls. The horse is above all the companion of the keeper but also his working tool.
